Welcome to GMO Free Washington

Let’s share our information and together we can help take down Goliath (Monsanto)!

What is a GMO?

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. GMOs are seeds that have been modified with foreign DNA to obtain a particular trait. Most common GMO crops are either Roundup Ready, meaning they will not die when sprayed with Roundup or BT, meaning a crop that expresses its own pesticide.

How long have GMOs been on the market?

We have been eating genetically modified organisms since 1996. Today, more then 80% of the food in any given grocery store is made with GMO ingredients.

Are GMOs safe for humans?

There have never been any human safety studies on GMOs due to the FDA’s
position that GMOs are not substantially different than their natural counterparts. Animal studies have shown potential dangers such as cancer, diabetes, intestinal disease, low birth weight, reproductive problems and other health risks.

What are the most common GM crops?

Corn, soy, cotton, canola, alfalfa and sugar beets. Small amounts of Hawaiian papaya, zucchini and yellow squash are GM. Crops currently being tested are rice, wheat, and salmon.
